Last week, a protest in response to Donald Trump’s election as the 45th President of the United States, marched on downtown Madison.
The protest addressed frustration with the result of the presidential election, especially in light of Trump’s multiple demeaning remarks about women, immigrants, African Americans, and Muslims. Around 2,500 people, many of whom are students at the University of Wisconsin, participated in the march.
Many passersby and downtown residents watched as protesters marched down Bascom Hill through State Street, and sat on the steps of the State Capitol.
One such passerby, Mitch Moran, clad in a “Make America Great Again” cap, was heard heckling protesters.
“Just shut up! Y’all a bunch of sore losers, go home!” Moran reportedly said. When questioned by several demonstrators about his comments, Moran said, “I have free speech! I can say whatever I want!”
The protesters, demonstrating their freedom of assembly as provided by the United States Constitution, felt amused by Moran’s spectacle.
“Jesus Christ, does this dude not realize the First Amendment just means the government cannot make laws restricting free speech?” said Caitlyn Michielsen, a UW junior attending the protest.
“I’m entitled to my opinion,” said Moran. “I may not actually be able to defend my opinion, but I can have it. Trump will protect free speech, which is why he’s going to blacklist the Media and stop these dumbass protesters! We’re gonna make America whi- I mean, great again!”
